In jewellery making, setting refers to the assembly of two pieces: commonly, a piece of jewellery that has been invited onto a metal support and cannot be glued or soldered. It must then be made to sit on or be held in place by metal claws.

In the case of the cufflinks set with daylight grain, the cabochons have slight holes, which, according to custom, should allow stones to be placed inside. Here they are left empty, blank, becoming the motif itself.
